Colombian Arepas Recipe. Arepas are a corn based cake that originated from Venezuela and Colombia. The Colombian arepa features "Masarepa" which is a white corn meal flour. Stuffed with small amounts of vegetables, meat, or cheese. This is a healthy meal that contains fiber. Arepas can be a street food that contains a blast of flavor. I love filling mine with cilantro, lime, fried plantains, mozzarella, and black beans. Arepas are a two step cooking / baking process. When mixing the arepa, add water in increments when mixing. A great tip when forming the arepa is to use water in a bowl when dipping hands, to prevent stickiness during shaping. First fry the arepas in butter each side for about a minute or two. Then bake at 400 ° F flipping halfway for 10 minutes. Let cool down be at least 5 minutes so the arepa doesn't fall apart when slicing the middle.
